Christmas comes early this year

This week I got an early Christmas present! Some nice parts for my new engine. A little history of this new engine, as this is a really long term project.

I have 2 predecessors, the first I never met, it was 25 years before me. I heard many stories of him, he was his first love. That beetle was a pearl white 1974 beetle with ducktail. It was hard to keep it in good order and had to be sold as project. It has a good life now, it has been rebuild to a 356 speedster. Some parts of him are still around here.

The second one was a barn find, in GSR looks, and came with a lot of parts. The beetle was after many years in a barn too bad to recover. However the parts seem more interesting, a 1600 base block and some Zenith double carburators, originates from a Porsche 356 C.

So from this one came the 1600 engine case. Many of the parts were too far gone to use. The build of the new engine started only in 2018, 10 years after the GSR. The engine is an inspiration of the Porsche 356 C, same characteristics but based on VW engine parts.

For the engineers; it is a 1641cc engine with EMPI camshaft, EMPI cilinder heads, high valve lift and Zenith 32NDIX carburetors. I can’t wait to try it. Hopefully next season I can hit the road with it!
