Rice, Water, Climate, and people – Takayama

Today we, a friend from Hamamatsu and me, drove from Hamamatsu to Takayama, a place located in the Japanese Alps. We shortly passed by Shirakawa but a road was closed and it was too rainy for a walk, so O only had the view on the characteristic houses on a drive-by.

We checked in to our home stay room for the night, that was going to be a new experience, but something Japanese so let’s go for it. The home stay location was a small house in the center of Takayama, i had 3 bedrooms. The decoration was simple Japanese, and as expected those seats were not comfortable.

In Takayama we went for a stroll, followed the places of a guide received from a colleague in Hamamatsu. A lot to see in this compact traditional build town. There were more tourists than I have seen in Kyoto, it seemed a popular place for tourism. We started from the vermeil red bridge that is Takayama landmark bridge.

The center has traditional dark wooden houses from the Edo time, many are turned into gift shops. One was one of the seven traditional breweries of Takayama.

From the center we went north and followed a trail that went along six or seven different shrines.

For dinner we had the Hida beef, a premium type of Wagyu beef, a delicious type of beef. Started with local Hida white beer followed by a small train of local Sake, the town has seven historic sake breweries.
